XC2-Core-Chips

Core Chips selection in inventory, changing Pyra's Guardian's Sword to Cavalry Sword

Core Chips are a type of equipment in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna ~ The Golden Country. They are accessories for Blades that strengthen them by altering their weapons. They can change weapons' stats and appearance.

They are consumable items. Once equipped, they are fused with the weapon and cannot be unequipped or sold. When applying a new Core Chip, the one currently equipped to the weapon is discarded, transforming the weapon in the process.

They can be purchased in Blacksmithing shops found around Alrest. They are also dropped by some Enemies, found in Treasure Troves, and earned after completing certain Quests and Merc Missions. Some can also be obtained as rewards for beating Challenges in the Land of Challenge.

New Game Plus exclusive weapon types are incompatible with Core Chips, and thus cannot be modified.

Stats and Effects[]

The Core Chip that is applied to a Blade weapon determines the combat stats of the Blade that wields it. While Physical and Ether Defense are unique to each Blade, the base Auto-Attack, Critical Rate and Block Rate stats are completely based on the equipped chip and weapon type. Each weapon created from the combination of a Core Chip and a Blade weapon of a certain type has its own unique name, appearance and stats, which are shared between all the Blades that can use them.

Certain Core Chips can also grant special passive effects to any weapon they are slotted into, with these effects varying between weapon types. They are usually only active when the Blade is used in battle, however certain ones like stat or reward increasing effects will still remain active even when the equipped Blade is not used in battle.

Trivia[]

  • Given the variety of possible combinations between Core Chips and different weapon types, there are a total of 1,306 distinct weapons that can be forged in the game, each with their own unique stats and names.
  • Certain combinations are impossible to create normally due to the limited pool of available chips in Torna ~ The Golden Country and some weapons not having the Lead Chip as a default Core Chip. Despite this all possible combinations exist in the game data, leading to a total of 54 unobtainable weapons.
  • Core Chips will change a weapon's appearance from its default appearance, but there are some chips that will restore the original appearance of a Blade's weapon:
    • Silver Chips, Bronze Chips, and Tin Chips will give Legendary Blade weapons (except Aegaeon's weapon) their original appearance.
    • Tachyon Chips will give Rare Blade weapons (and Aegaeon's weapon) their original appearance, except for Roc, Dromarch, Pandoria and Nia.
    • The Aegis Sword, Variable Saber, Poppibuster's Shield Hammer, T-elos's Greataxe, Monado, Knives, Dual Swords, Crosier, Nodachi, and Gunknives will not change their appearance, no matter what Core Chip is equipped.
    • In Torna ~ The Golden Country, Brighid's Whipswords and Aegaeon's Chroma Katana will not change in appearance, no matter what Core Chip is equipped.
