"Your blade… It did not cut deep enough."
— Egil

Egil (Japanese: エギル, Egiru; English dub: /ˈɛɡᵻl/) is an antagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles. He is a Machina, the leader of the Mechon army, creator of the Faced Mechon, and the mastermind behind their invasion of Bionis. Miqol says that he was kind and helpful towards the poor and brave before he swore revenge against Bionis. Egil also proves to be very strong, for at the battle at Agniratha, Shulk stabs him and it does not appear to have any effect. He then picks up Shulk by the face and pulls the Monado from his shoulder.

Personality[]

Originally, Egil wanted coexistence between the life of Bionis and Mechonis, being great friends with Arglas, a Giant of Bionis. He even harbored dreams of their people leaving the gods to explore the universe. When Zanza possessed Arglas and conducted a genocide on Mechonis, Egil became consumed with a desire for vengeance.

From there, Egil planned a campaign against the Bionis, having Mechon massacre settlements of Bionis life forms. This was not out of malice, but rather pragmatism. Egil thought draining Bionis's food source would allow Egil to kill it and Zanza. Egil displays great intelligence and resourcefulness, developing machines like Face Mechon, ether poison, and the Apocrypha Generator to counteract the Monado and Bionis lifeforms. Egil even goes as far as to eventually hijack Mechonis to destroy Bionis.

Despite his well intentioned plans, Egil gets angered by how others reject him, denouncing Meyneth and Vanea when they ally with Shulk and his party. In the past, Egil even killed his own Machina brethren who tried to stop his Bionis revenge scheme. In addition, Egil believes Shulk is destined to lose his mind to Zanza like Arglas did. When Shulk defies his expectations, Egil comes to believe in Bionis and Mechonis co-existence again. His faith in Meyneth also returns, and he becomes distraught when Zanza kills her, and when he fails to reclaim her Monado. Sacrificing himself to prevent Zanza from killing the party, Egil expressed his hopes that the Mechonis and Bionis survivors will not judge the actions of his life, but of his death.

Appearance[]

Egil is a moderately size Machina. As such, he has dual toned skin with dark gray on the outside and light gray on the inside. Lines are present throughout his face. He has red eyes and barely visible silver hair. His armor is silver with orange energy highlights. His head gear has two downward facing curved structures. He has prominent shoulder pieces with two cylindrical pieces that feature spikes at the side and bottom. He also has upwards facing curved protrusions on his elbows and the wrists have big cuffs. He also has a rear skirt and his shoes feature short heels. Egil's hands are uncovered by his armor and are a whitish grey with black diamond patches at each joint.

Story[]

Prior to Xenoblade Chronicles[]

Egil Arglas DE

Egil with Arglas

As a Machina, Egil has a very long lifespan, and he existed before the quarrel of Bionis and Mechonis. As with most Machina he was a worshipper of Meyneth. He was friends with a Giant, Arglas, with whom he discussed the idea of leaving the world of Bionis and Mechonis in search of new worlds. He was witness to the possession of Arglas by Zanza and his attack on Agniratha using Telethia. After the end of the attack, he vowed to destroy Zanza in revenge of his friend and his kinsmen. To this end, he repaired Mechonis' missing arm, established Agniratha as his base of operations, and used the Mechon to attack Bionis in an attempt to reduce Zanza's regeneration rate. He expected the reawakening of Meyneth. The surviving Machina gathered to stop Egil, but their efforts were ineffective and many died. Other than Egil, the Machina evacuated Agniratha in favour of the Fallen Arm.

Attacks on Bionis[]

Battle at Sword Valley

Mechon at the Battle of Sword Valley

Egil's early attacks annihilated all Homs Colonies except 6 and 9. The conflict ended at the Battle of Sword Valley, where the Mechon force was stopped by Dunban with the Monado. Egil was now forced to create soldiers resistant to the Monado's power. Although he suffered a crippling defeat, he emerged from the war with the inspiration that would lead him to create Faced Mechon, by transplanting captured Homs into a Mechon unit.

Using the first Face Mechon, Egil attacked Colony 9 with Metal Face and Colony 6 with Xord. Colony 6 was destroyed with few people escaping to the camp on Bionis' Leg. Colony 9 was saved by use of the Monado, despite Metal Face's presence.

At Valak Mountain, Egil makes his first appearance inside his own Mechon, Yaldabaoth. He comes with several Mass-Produced Faces and Metal Face to collect Face Nemesis. After collecting her, he departs and the party follows.

Mechonis[]

The party meets Egil at the bottom of Galahad Fortress. Before the fight, he deactivates the Monado using the Apocrypha Generator, which emits opposing ether waves. He is able to control Face Nemesis, but Fiora's conscious pleads with Meyneth, who is piloting, to break free of Egil's control and save Shulk. Meyneth succeeds in a suicidal attack that destroys most of Galahad Fortress and greatly damages Nemesis. Egil survives the destruction of Galahad Fortress in Yaldabaoth, and wonders where the power came from.

In the Central Factory, Egil reflects about the Face Mechon. He now thinks that Faces are flawed as they retain their memories and free will. Mumkhar proves an example of this weakness. To correct this, he finds a worthy Face unit in Jade Face, and strips him of his memories and free will.

It did not cut deep enough DE

Egil unfazed by being stabbed

At Meyneth Shrine, Egil awaits the party. Vanea tries to reason with him before they arrive, but to no avail. After revealing the reason for waging war against the people of Bionis, Egil confronts the party without Yaldabaoth. Shulk tries to reason with him having stabbed him with the Monado but Egil brushes Shulk off and summons Yaldabaoth. Meyneth reveals herself to him in order to protect the party. He rejects Meyneth, claiming that "she sides with his sworn enemy," and prepares to destroy the whole city. Gadolt sacrifices himself in order to shield the party from this attack. Egil then enters the Mechonis Core and is able to control the Mechonis using the Ether extracted from the Bionis, in a last attempt to destroy Bionis.

Mechonis' Awakening[]

Egil at the Core

As the party approaches the Core, Egil gains more control of the Mechonis. The party fight their way down to the control room, where Egil shows that he is now controlling Mechonis from within Yaldabaoth. After a certain amount of damage is dealt, a story quest is activated. In 120 seconds (2 minutes), the three Energy Devices around him must be destroyed, or the party will be killed instantaneously, because Egil attacks Bionis. After the fight, Shulk beheads Egil's Mechon. Just as Shulk is going to kill Egil, Zanza's voice starts encouraging revenge. However, Shulk's recent memories and his own will interfere with his desire for retribution, and he does not kill Egil. Shulk asks for a truce between the two worlds. Egil remembers the peace there once was between Mechonis and Bionis, finally understanding Lady Meyneth's wish, and slowly agrees - and then Shulk is shot in the back.

Egil's final resting place

Egil recognizes Dickson as Zanza's disciple and tries to attack Zanza as he awakens from Shulk's body, but Egil is weak from the previous battle, and Yaldabaoth is maimed in the process. Meyneth manages to stop Zanza from killing the party but is destroyed in the process, and when Zanza teleports away Egil decides to stay in the Core. As they escape from Zanza aboard Junks, Egil uses Mechonis as a shield so they can escape. Zanza retaliates and destroys Mechonis; Egil is killed in the attack.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed[]

In Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed, Egil appears in a flashback when Shulk and Rex are telling the rest of the party the history of their original worlds, Alrest and the Bionis, and how each world had their own hardships before eventually finding peace prior to the creation of Aionios. He also appears in the credits, during scenes from Xenoblade Chronicles.
