"Zanza. Respond, Zanza. I know you can hear me."
— Meyneth

Meyneth (Japanese: メイナス, Meinasu, Maynus; English dub: /ˈmeɪnɛθ/), also referred to by her venerators as Lady Meyneth, is a supporting character in Xenoblade Chronicles. She is the soul of Mechonis and Zanza's equal. She wields her own Monado in combat, and is addressed as Lady Meyneth by all Machina. Bionis life simply call her Meyneth.

Appearance[]

Chronologically, Meyneth first appears as a human; a female scientist with long silver hair. She wears a black choker, red dress, black belt, and a lab coat. When the Mechonis was created, she became the titan's immortal soul, causing her appearance to match that of the god. At the time of the game, as a god she resembles that of a Machina, wearing a black armoured dress with blue and pale pink decoration. She has three glowing blue rings behind her, and pipes attached to her back. She is only seen in person in one cutscene and one flashback, but is depicted in the Meyneth Statue and Meyneth Shrine.

Meyneth as a human scientist in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

Meyneth was a human scientist working alongside Zanza, originally called Klaus, on a space station orbiting Earth. She tried to stop Klaus from activating the experiment, as the results from previous tests were unconfirmed, but was pushed aside as the experiment was activated, leading to the creation of a new world. When Bionis and Mechonis were subsequently created, Meyneth created life in the form of Machina on Mechonis. In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, this event is viewed again and reveals her name, Galea.

War of the Titans[]

Meyneth maintained the Mechonis peacefully until attacked unprovoked by Zanza, when she used her body as Mechonis and retaliated by attacking Bionis in order to stop Zanza. This exhausted both gods, who retreated into rest to replenish their powers.

Vanea witnesses Meyneth's reawakening

By some unknown chance, Vanea came into possession of Meyneth's soul before the events of the game, which she secretly transfers into Face Nemesis centuries after the war in order to combat the reappearance of Zanza's Monado on the Bionis. While Meyneth and Fiora occupy the same body, neither are originally fully aware of the others' presence. Meyneth completely controls the body at first, although comes to share it for a while later.

Meyneth's actions[]

After being implanted into Nemesis, Meyneth is first seen at Prison Island alongside Metal Face, where she talks with Zanza telepathically. Shulk attacks her while she is distracted, forcing her to disengage Zanza, and she takes a blow meant for Metal Face after failing to stop him from attacking Shulk and the party as their mission only concerns Zanza. The attack damages Nemesis and reveals Fiora's body to be the pilot; as Meyneth does not have Fiora's awareness or her memories, she doesn't recognize Shulk and retreats with the rest of the Mechon to avoid further damage.

Meyneth leaves the Mechon stronghold alone, in Nemesis, and attempts to talk with Shulk and the party later when they reach the foot of Valak Mountain. Before she can speak to them she is knocked unconscious by Metal Face and brought back to Galahad Fortress by Egil. She is then remotely controlled to attack the party when they reach the fortress and try to rescue Fiora, as Egil can control Mechon regardless of their pilot or lack thereof. After the party is defeated by Egil, Fiora begs Meyneth to attack Egil to save Shulk; Meyneth breaks free of Egil's hold using power from her Monado, which causes the destruction of part of the fortress and the party and Face Nemesis to plummet to the Fallen Arm, where Nemesis is destroyed.

Fiora awakes on the Fallen Arm, as the attack at the fortress has put Meyneth into remission from exhaustion inside Fiora's mind. Fiora insists that they uncover the identity of her alter ego, to pay her back for her help at the fortress. Shulk reluctantly agrees.

After advancing onto Mechonis Field, Meyneth appears from time to time to aid the group and give advice. She shields the party from Gadolt's blast, and she returns his heart and free will in Agniratha. She attempts to reason with Egil, but he rejects her, feeling betrayed for her siding with lifeforms of Bionis once he learns she has been revived.

Meyneth Departs Fiora's Body

Meyneth leaving Fiora's body to defend against Zanza's attack

After Shulk defeats Egil and is about to make a truce with him, Dickson shoots Shulk through the chest, releasing Zanza. Fiora and Meyneth challenge Zanza and attack him, however, during the fight, Zanza notes that Meyneth is not putting her full effort into the battle. He realizes that feelings for Shulk are the cause for this, and Zanza aims a blast of energy at him. Meyneth protects him, and Zanza fires a much stronger blast at the party, aiming to destroy them.

Meyneth leaves Fiora's body to defend them and is killed by the blast. Her last words decree that the party should strive to "create a world with no need for gods." She disappears in a bright burst of light, and her Monado falls towards Egil, who reaches up to catch them before Zanza pulls them back, laughing, before teleporting away and reanimating the Bionis, attacking the Mechonis once more. Egil moves the Mechonis, fighting against Zanza, knowing his destruction is inevitable.

It is later revealed that Meyneth, and her Monado, provided Fiora's life force after her transformation into a Face Mechon pilot. It is unclear how long Fiora can survive for without Meyneth.
