Sandstream (Japanese: サンドストレーム, Sandosutorēmu) is an NPC in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. He is an Ardainian Driver. He taunts Godfrey for his sense of justice, and later takes advantage of the dancer Harghal to cause chaos in Theosoir.

Story[]

While Godfrey and the party are strolling through Fonsa Myma discussing Rex's dream to reach Elysium, Sandstream and his Blade spontaneously attack the party for no discernible reason. However, after a battle, Sandstream reveals that the reason he attacked them was to get Godfrey's attention and tell him that his idea of "justice" is skewed and deluded, imploring him to investigate the case of a former dancer named Harghal who used to work for Bana at the Argentum Trade Guild. This begins the Blade Quest Flames of Justice. After tracking down Harghal with the help of Krujah and her mother Adella, she confesses to Godfrey that after losing her job as one of Bana's dancers due to him being arrested and replaced by Niranira as chairman, Sandstream offered her a position in an illegal operation that involved transporting Pollen Orbs to Theosoir. These Pollen Orbs would be used to manufacture and sell an illicit and dangerous product; an addictive drink with several times the potency of the Pollen Orbs themselves.

Harghal reluctantly accepts, knowing that, despite the fact that she was getting involved in shady business and that her new boss was just another criminal mastermind, she needed that money to support her sick mother back in Alba Cavanich. Sandstream uses this as leverage to prove to Godfrey that his idea of justice does not exist and that humans are driven by their own selfish desires in every decision that they make. He states that Harghal knew full well the type of business she was getting herself involved in and how it could pose a danger to others but chose to proceed anyway for her own reasons. Sandstream then reveals that he had tested out the product on several of the monsters outside of Theosoir, causing them to go berserk and terrorize the city as a way to "advertise" his product. Harghal, of course, blames herself for this catastrophe. After Godfrey and the party subdue the monsters and evacuate the citizens, Sandstream shows up once again to reiterate his point and attempts to blame for act of terrorism on Harghal, claiming she inadvertently caused chaos in Theosoir for her own selfish reasons. Godfrey, however, does not accept this explanation, stating that Sandstream is responsible for this mess and that he is the one who needs to be punished for his crimes. After a successful battle against Sandstream, Godfrey tells Harghal that if she is really sorry for the choices she made that lead to these events, she must dedicate her life to helping other people and try to make money using safe and legal means.
