For the hit points mechanic in Xenoblade Chronicles X, see Hit Points (X).

Hit Points, commonly referred to as HP, are an important mechanic in Xenoblade Chronicles. They are needed to keep characters from being incapacitated. If the controlled character has 0 HP, the AI characters must use a party bar to revive the incapacitated character. If there is no party bar or no battle, the party will be transported back to the last landmark they visited. During the time between battles, HP are recovered quickly. Outside battle, if a character has an Auto-Heal Up gem equipped, their HP will recover more quickly.

HP values are influenced by multiple factors:

  • Taking damage from enemy attacks
  • Taking spike damage
  • Taking damage from status effects (Poison, Chill, Burn, and Bleed)
  • Being healed by various healing arts and the Regeneration buff.
  • Using HP depriving skills such as Battle Soul or Final Flicker

Each character has a fixed base HP values.

From highest Base HP to lowest: Riki, Reyn, Fiora, Dunban, Shulk, Sharla, and Melia.

Base HP can be raised by multiple factors:

  • HP Up gems (Max of 50% of base)
  • Levelling up
  • HP Up skills or HP Up skill tree bonuses

Enemies also have HP, which must be lowered to zero for them to be defeated, except in the case of some bosses, where the HP that must be taken away varies but it's usually 50%.
