"An entire horizon of white. A sea of clouds, and at its heart, the World Tree, piercing the heavens..."
— Rex

Rex (Japanese: レックス, Rekkusu; English dub: /ˈɹɛks/) is the main playable character and the male protagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. He is a Driver who harnesses the power of a Blade named Pyra, also known as the legendary Aegis. Rex devotes himself into protecting her, and together with Pyra, he goes on a quest to find her long-lost home, Elysium. Due to the Aegis' duality, Rex can use the power of the other incarnation of the weapon, Mythra.

Rex was designed by Masatsugu Saitō, the lead character designer for the game.

Personality[]

Rex is an optimistic and easy-going, yet naive, young boy. He wishes to protect and support those close to him, to the point that he sends most of the money he obtains from salvaging to his home village. However, Rex tends to be careless and overconfident, which puts him and his companions in trouble from time to time.

Since being a kid, Rex had a strong sense of justice and was against conflict and war; due to this, he wants to reach Elysium, as he believes that, by doing so, he can save humanity from its dying world. He fears causing suffering to others with his actions, usually blaming himself whenever someone is hurt or killed.

As an adult, Rex is still free-spirited and optimistic, but he has shed his old naivety as a result of his many adventures and the later war with Moebius and can be far more blunt than he used to be when he is upset. Due to having no real family to speak of besides Azurda, he initially finds it difficult to get along with his daughter Glimmer. However, the two eventually begin to grow closer and Rex proclaims that he will do anything to keep her safe, even if it costs him his life.

Rex and Shulk are shown to be close friends. The two leaders of the Liberators have complete trust in each other and know very well of how the other thinks.

Rex is shown to have become a talented cook as an adult as shown during Cooking with Rex, Parts 1, 2, and 3, as well as during Linka's Birthday.

Appearance[]

In Xenoblade Chronicles 2[]

Rex is a young teen with short brown hair and golden eyes. After awakening Pyra, part of her Core Crystal appears on his chest in an X shape. Rex usually wears a blue, brown and gold salvager gear on a blue outfit which is completely covered when salvaging. He wears an anchor on his left arm and a diving helmet in which he usually carries Azurda.

As the Master Driver, Rex wears futuristic-looking white and green armor, matching Pneuma's. It maintains the overall shape of Rex's initial armor, and is functional for salvaging.

Alternate Costumes[]

Rex alts

Cloud Sea Shark, Cloud Sea King, Prototype Suit

Rex has three alternate costumes which can be obtained as DLC Accessories via Challenge Battle Mode. These are:

In Xenoblade Chronicles 3[]

Rex wears bluish village clothing as an adult. He also grows taller and develops a facial structure similar to Addam's.

In Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed[]

In Future Redeemed, and as a Hero in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Rex has a thin beard and wears a black coat with blue patterning over a gray compression shirt and wears black pants and a belt. He still wears his salvaging anchor on his left arm. During combat, he wields the Firelight Swords, blades similar but visually distinct from Pyra and Mythra's Aegis Swords. He can combine the two swords into a single blade, similar to Pneuma's sword. He lost his left eye during the fight with Alpha.

Story[]

Xenoblade Chronicles 2[]

Early life[]

The circumstances of Rex's birth and early years are unknown. He was around two years old when he and his mother washed up on the shores of Fonsett Village. His mother died upon arrival and his father's body was found elsewhere in the Leftherian Archipelago nearby; they were both buried in Oratory Knoll Cemetery. Rex grew up in Fonsett under care of Corinne, raised by the townsfolk and the Titan Azurda, known to Rex as "Gramps". By the age of 15, Rex is living full-time on the back of Azurda in the Cloud Sea, where he earns a living as a Salvager.

The Driver of the Aegis[]

XC2-Azurda

Rex and Azurda

While visiting the Argentum Trade Guild Rex is offered a high-paid salvaging job, requested by an organisation called Torna through the Chairman of Argentum. He accepts, joining the crew aboard the C.S.E.V. Maelstrom on the way to the Ancient Ship. Once there, Rex is ordered by Jin, Torna's leader, to accompany them to the interior of the ship to open sealed doors only accessible by Leftherians. Past the doors, Rex is the first to enter a room containing a sword and a chamber containing a young woman held in suspended animation. Rex approaches and accidentally touches the Core Crystal on the sword's hilt, and Jin stabs Rex through the heart, killing him.

XC2-Rex-and-Pyra

Rex meets Pyra

Rex finds himself in an open green field, with the girl from the ship standing under a tree atop a hill ahead. Rex goes to her, and she introduces herself as Pyra, a Blade, and informs him to his horror that he has been killed; they are in her memory of the legendary Elysium. Pyra offers Rex half of her own life force to revive him, on the promise that he take her to the real Elysium at the top of the World Tree. After reviving, Rex and Pyra confront Malos in an attempt to save the other salvagers. Nia, a member of Torna already shaken by Rex's death, joins them after disagreeing with Jin and Malos' capacity for murder. As the salvagers escape a ship arrives belonging to Torna and fires on them, but Azurda appears, saving Rex, Nia, Pyra, and Dromarch and fleeing from the ship. He is wounded during the escape and the group wash up in the Gormott Province separated from each other.

Wanted by the Ardainian Empire[]

Rescuing Nia

Rex wakes alone with Pyra. They find Azurda mortally wounded, but he is able to regenerate instead of dying, into a younger, nymph-like state able to fit in Rex's helmet. After reuniting with Nia, they set out to Nia's hometown of Torigoth. Nia is recognised as a member of Torna and thus a terrorist, and captured by Ardainian troops occupying Torigoth in order to lure Rex to them to confiscate Pyra due to her power as the Aegis. Rex allies with a local Nopon called Tora, who dislikes the occupation and is building his own Artificial Blade, Poppi. With Tora's help, Rex and Pyra rescue Nia and the group leaves Gormott on a Titan ship bound for the World Tree. The group is attacked by Ophion, and their ship is destroyed upon being swallowed whole by the Urayan Titan.

Lessons on Life[]

Within Uraya the party meet Vandham, the leader of a mercenary group, who offers his help to them after battling them to test Rex's strength. He acts like a tutor to Rex, influencing his viewpoint on war and conflict when Vandham recognises that Rex is unaware of much about Blades and Driving. He escorts the group to Fonsa Myma to meet one of Vandham's acquaintances, Cole, who Vandham believes may know about climbing the World Tree. Pyra disappears to confront Malos and Akhos in Olethro Ruins when they kidnap Cole's granddaughter. Rex follows and tries to fight them but is unable to win, resulting in Vandham's death as he tries to save Rex. Rex tries to fight on despite this, forcing Mythra to awaken to protect him, overwhelming Malos and Akhos with her power before berating Rex's foolish attack. Rex breaks down over Vandham's death.

Joining Forces with Mor Ardain and Tantal[]

RexGraves

Rex speaks to his parents' graves

After Vandham's funeral, Rex inherits Roc's Core Crystal and the Garfont mercenary company. Additionally, Pyra and Azurda reveal to the party that Malos is another Aegis. Following Cole's suggestion, the party decides to go to the Indoline Praetorium to meet Cole's original Driver, Amalthus, via the Empire of Mor Ardain. In Mor Ardain, they are attacked by Mòrag and Brighid due to a misunderstanding. Thanks to Niranira, the situation gets cleared up. Rex and Mòrag then agree to join forces to prevent a sale of Artificial Blades to Torna. She joins the group and Fan la Norne, the "Goddess of the Praetorium", meets them and guides them toward the Praetorium. They stop at Fonsett Village in Leftheria, where Rex shows Pyra his parent's graves, and promises again to take her to Elysium. At the final ship to Indol, Zeke, who has confronted Rex and his group in Uraya and Mor Ardain under the guise of stealing Pyra, stands against them a third time, revealing himself as the Tantalese prince and an envoy of the Praetorium, joining the party.

When Rex meets Praetor Amalthus in Indol, he is reminded him of Malos, although this is rationalized as due to Amalthus being Malos' Driver. During the party's stay in the Praetorium, a Titan weapon excavated by Mor Ardain in Temperantia is stolen by Jin to attack Urayan troops. The party go to stop him, but Fan la Norne is stabbed and killed. After the political tension born from Jin's actions calm down, Rex is informed by Amalthus that Ophion may be controlled with the Omega Fetter in the Kingdom of Tantal. After arriving there and saving Pyra from King Eulogimenos, who tries to kill her as he assumes her presence a threat, the group travels down to the Omega Fetter in Genbu's head. They are ambushed by Torna and defeated by Jin, revealing himself to be a Blade with control of elementary particles. He takes Pyra and the Fetter, and tells Rex that he is the one responsible for Pyra and Mythra's pain. Rex is left badly injured and unconscious, with the Aegis Sword broken, and spends the next few days recovering in bed at Anastatia's in Theosoir.

The Master Driver[]

RexThirdSword

Rex finds the third sword

Being defeated and humiliated by Jin shatters Rex's self-esteem. After waking up, he explains to the others that he has given up and wants to go back to Argentum. Nia, Poppi and Brighid intervene, trying to make Rex realize that Pyra had been willing to sacrifice her life for his sake. The conversation is interrupted by Pandoria, who announces that King Eulogimenos has a message for Rex. The King informs Rex about the Third Aegis Sword, left behind by Addam, and Azurda informs him of the location of the sword: the Spirit Crucible Elpys. There, the group confronts Addam's Phantasms, and Nia reveals that she is a Flesh Eater as she finally trusts Rex with her identity. Addam's spirit recognizes Rex as worthy of the power of the Aegis, and tells him to understand the fear Pyra and Mythra carry in order to become her true Driver. Despite not being able to obtain the third sword as they had hoped, Rex is able to intuit Pyra's location thanks to his half of the Core Crystal they share. With new incentive, the group travels to the Cliffs of Morytha to save Pyra and Mythra and fulfil Rex's promise of taking them to Elysium.

Third-Sword

Rex becomes the Master Driver

At the Gotrock Oracle Ruins, Rex confronts Jin and Malos, who has regained his power as an Aegis by stealing the memories from Pyra's Core Crystal. During the battle, Rex speaks to Pyra's and Mythra's spirits, assuring them that he will protect them no matter what and not allow the world to burn a second time. This understanding of Pyra and Mythra's fear allows Rex to unlock their true power as Pneuma, with Rex becoming the Master Driver as a result. Combining their power, Rex and Pneuma are able to overpower Jin, but Rex, seeing the sadness in Jin's eyes, refuses to finish him. Malos then summons Ophion, who he had taken control of with the Omega Fetter, and attacks them. Pneuma responds by using Siren to battle Ophion. The battle of the two Artifices destroys the ruins where they stand, causing the party and Jin to fall through the Cloud Sea below.

Climbing the World Tree[]

Rex wakes in the Land of Morytha, below the Cloud Sea, with Mythra asleep by his side. After she wakes up, Rex informs her of the situation, and they search for the others. They find Jin first, heavily injured as his Core Crystal has cracked, struggling to defeat a Guldo. Rex puts their differences aside and helps him, forming a temporary alliance. After reuniting with Brighid, Poppi, and Azurda, the group continues toward the World Tree. The discover the decaying remains of the Tornan Titan, where Azurda and Jin reveal to the rest of them that Blades eventually become Titans. In the Womb Center, Jin reveals to the group what happened to him following the Aegis War before the group is attacked by the Infernal Guldo. During the battle, the party reunites and defeats the monster. After, Rex notices something on the ground that the monster dropped and is shocked to realize that the monster might have once been human. After Jin leaves the party, they reach the entrance to the World Tree by its roots. Pneuma opens up the elevator, and they begin their final path to reach Elysium.

RexJin

Rex points his sword at Jin

While the party climbs the World Tree, Amalthus appears, controlling Indol, and attacks Torna's Marsanes. Amalthus uses his powers as a Driver of an Aegis (amplified by his half of Fan's Core Crystal) to take control of Mor Ardain, Genbu, and Uraya. He attempts to use Siren through Mythra, but Rex is able to use his own powers as the Master Driver to counter Amalthus'. Rex and Pneuma, with help from Poppi, manage to get near the Indoline Titan, and use Pneuma's powers to slow down time and destroy the amplification towers for Amalthus' powers. Near the upper level of the World Tree, Rex and the rest of the party come face to face again with Jin, who awaited them to test Rex's resolve one last time. Jin is unable to best Rex, who explains to Jin his admiration for Blades, and his wish to ask the Architect the reason why he created them, but Rex believes he already knows the answer. The moment is interrupted by Amalthus in a monstrous Blade Eater form, as he kills Patroka and Akhos. Driven by his desire to not let anyone other than himself meet the Architect, Amalthus threatens to cause the entire World Tree to collapse. Resolutions clear after hearing Rex's words, Jin sacrifices himself to kill Amalthus. The party stands in awe of Jin's act for a moment, and proceed to take the final elevator to Elysium.

Tragedies of the Past[]

PneumaRex

Rex and Pneuma confront Malos

Once the elevator stops, the party finds themselves in the First Low Orbit Station, Rhadamanthus. They traverse some corridors until they finally arrive at Elysium. Instead of the grassy fields Rex had seen in Pyra's dream, they find desolated ruins. Rex, though disbelieving at the state of Elysium, leads the party towards a church in the distance. There, a voice welcomes them, and a passage appears leading below ground. Descending, Rex turns and finds himself alone; he is attacked by spectres of his companions, blaming him for everything they have lost. After fleeing these attacks he finds himself in Corinne's house with Pyra and Mythra, who confuse him by acting like each other. When Rex breaks down in tears Pyra asks the Architect to stop, as he was testing Rex to determine his true nature.

Rex finds himself in the Architect's Room with the rest of the party and the Architect; an aged, mechanically augmented man missing his right half. The Architect tells them his name is Klaus, and explains the creation of Alrest, including the cycle of Blades and Titans. He tells the party that he was once a human who activated the Conduit to open gateways into other dimensions due to his lack of faith in mankind. His actions resulted in the world splitting in two. Klaus explains how the Aegises were originally the cores of the Trinity Processor, known as Ontos, Logos, and Pneuma. The Trinity Processor was designed to monitor the Conduit and that the power Rex and Pneuma wield is that of the Conduit, and that once it disappears, they won't be able to use their power anymore. Rex thanks Klaus for giving them life, before the party enters the Aion Hangar to confront Malos.

The True Elysium[]

During the battle against Artifice Aion, Rex explains to Malos that Jin never wanted to die, but rather to connect with Malos. After dealing a fatal blow to Aion, causing Malos' Core Crystal to break, Rex understands Malos' life and states that if he had been his Driver, Malos' fate would have been different. Malos laughs, stating that there was only one Driver for him, before dying.

RexCore

Rex recieves Pneuma's core crystal

As the Conduit disappears, the Orbital Stations begin to fall. The party, following Pneuma's instructions, head toward the what they assume to be the control room. Once they get there Rex realizes that Pneuma had just guided them towards the escape pods, planning to sacrifice herself to destroy the World Tree and the Orbital Station using the remains of Aion's energy to prevent its wreckage obliterating Alrest. Rex tries to stop her, offering to go with her, but his attempts are fruitless. He accepts Pneuma's decision, receiving the other half of her Core Crystal they were sharing and loses his Master Driver abilities in the process.

RexAegis

Pyra and Mythra reawaken

The escape pod the party takes begins to disintegrate in the atmosphere, but Azurda is able to save the party by returning to his original Titan form thanks to Pneuma's previous preparations. Flying above the surface of Alrest, they see the Titans start to merge with the land, creating a new world, following Klaus's final command. While this happens, Pneuma's Core Crystal begins to glow in Rex's hand. In a flash of light, both Pyra and Mythra appear in front of Rex. After one final push from Nia, he takes a step forward towards them.

Torna ~ The Golden Country[]

Five hundred years prior to meeting Rex, during her final battle against Malos in the Aegis War, Mythra's foresight shows her visions of Rex; resonating with Pyra, Driving Mythra when she first reawakens, holding his hands out to both Mythra and Pyra when he accepts their fear at the Cliffs of Morytha, and turning to smile while on Azurda's back.

New Life With His Friends[]

Rex lived in Leftheria alongside his companions into his adulthood. At some point after the events of the game, he was photographed alongside his companions as an adult.

The Two Worlds Draw Near[]

A few decades after Malos's defeat, Alrest and the Bionis, the two worlds that Klaus created by splitting the original apart with the Conduit, began to re-fuse back together, which would effectively destroy both. As the worlds drew closer, they began to devise a plan that would allow their worlds to survive destruction. Both worlds would construct one half of an ark known as Origin that contained all of their societies' knowledge and their citizens' literal souls, which would allow them to be reborn after their worlds were split apart and returned to their original forms. The Core Crystal of Ontos was a critical part of its construction. However, Origin had been affected by the digitized souls of the people within it, creating the being called Z. Born from their fear of an uncertain future and their desire for stability, Z hijacked the intersection of the worlds. Rather than Origin preserving the worlds as planned, both original worlds were frozen in time during their attempt to merge back together, creating Aionios. Rex was among the few people not to be assimilated by Origin, with the reason for this being unknown.

Forming the Liberators[]

Shulk Rex Fighting Alpha

Rex and Shulk confronting Alpha

Rex eventually meets Shulk, an old friend of the Kevesi Queen Melia, and the two of them become close friends. Rex also begins wielding his Firelight Swords, replicas of Pyra and Mythra's swords, as his Blades. At an unknown point in time, Ontos, now calling himself "Alpha" while taking an appearance of another of Shulk's friends Alvis, re-emerged to take control of Origin's systems for himself. Having determined that the future had no place for the beings of the old worlds, he planned to destroy Aionios while bringing the new lives born there to another world, where no traces of the past would remain.

Rex and Shulk, alongside Z, confront Alpha in an attempt to drive him away, with Shulk trying to reach out to Alpha to question if this is what he truly wants, only for Rex to stop him by telling him that he cannot get through to him due to him being a "Heartless Machine". Alpha then blows all three of them away without much effort, costing Rex his left eye. After this, Rex and Shulk agree to a ceasefire with Z until Alpha is defeated. Rex and Shulk later became the leaders of the Liberators and made Colony 9 their base of operations. At some point, Rex became the mentor for Linka.

Meeting Ouroboros[]

Triple Attack

Rex, Shulk, and Matthew destroy Consul W

When Glimmer and Nikol are about to be hit by a laser from W's fused Ferronis, Rex steps in and protects them. After a long battle against W, Rex, Shulk, and Matthew attack W and his Ferronis simultaneously, destroying the Moebius. He and Shulk then take everyone back to Colony 9, where they show them around and lead them to their lodgings. The next day, the party is informed of a distress signal coming from Raguel Lake on The Ragmos Desolation, which they go to investigate.

A Rex Shulk

Rex, Shulk, and A

After setting up camp by Raguel Lake, Rex, Shulk, and A have a discussion about Alpha and what he intends to do, with A explaining that they are the manifestation of Ontos's discarded conscience that was unshackled from Alpha due to N's power and Ghondor's dying act. When Shulk asks the reason for A's appearance, Rex explains as being due to the way the Trinity Processor was designed - Logos being the male persona, Pneuma being the female, and, as Rex describes it, Ontos being somewhere in between. A also explains how Alpha is inhabiting Na'el in the same way Zanza had once inhabited Shulk.

Their conversation is interrupted by the appearance of Na'el, who is inhabited by Alpha. The party fights Alpha until N shows up and fights Alpha himself. The party then explains to Matthew that as long as Alpha exists, Moebius is not the primary target, and that N is not their enemy. Alpha, suffering severe damage, leaves and tells the party she will be waiting. Prison Island then releases energy that causes Origin to appear above the Cent-Omnia Region.

The Origin of the Worlds[]

After returning to Colony 9, Rex and Shulk tell Matthew, Glimmer, and Nikol about the origins of Aionios, telling them about how, originally, their worlds were one and the same. This world boasted almost unthinkable prosperity and was home to countless people. However, one man, Klaus, messed it all up and caused the world to be split into two separate places. One was the world of the Bionis, and the other was Alrest. The two divided worlds began to evolve independently of each other, giving birth to new life. However, it wasn't all peaceful, with there being tyrannic empires and conflicts over limited resources. But despite all that, thanks to numerous generations of people fighting for the future, the worlds were eventually able to attain harmony.

They then explain how the worlds began to return to how they once were. However, since they were composed of opposing types of matter, they would dissolve into light and cease to be when recombined. To escape destruction, the two worlds worked together to build Origin, a repository of data about everything, of memories and souls. Even if the worlds were annihilated, the Origin system would allow them to be revived. They explain how at the heart of Origin's workings is the Trinity Processor core, Ontos, or in other words, Alpha, and also how, Alpha had deemed the existence of all people from the two worlds obsolete and wanted to erase them. They then explain that Alpha is now gathering power and preparing to depart in the heart of Origin, called The Ark, alongside the new lives, those of City people, gathered there for the purpose of taking them to a new world.

Linka questions why Alpha would specifically choose Na'el to inhabit, to which Rex states its likely due to the fact that Na'el has Agnian ancestry and in terms of hereditary traits, Core Crystals get dominance. Rex theorizes that it's because Alpha got injured when they fought or that she's got whatever he's lacking.

Rex and Shulk's Test[]

Shulk and Rex Ready to Fight

Rex and Shulk fight Glimmer and Nikol

The party then discusses what to do next, determining that Prison Island would be their best bet of reaching Origin, where Alpha is waiting. However, in order to get there, they need to gather the resources needing to build an Ether Lift in order to travel vertically. In order to gather the necessary materials, Rex opens up the Sealed Cave, which he had previously blocked off due to it being dangerous. Additionally, Nikol and Glimmer request to come with everyone to Origin, but Rex and Shulk adamantly refuse, deeming Nikol and Glimmer unworthy of challenging Alpha, telling them they must stay in the Colony. The party asks Riku about boosting their Ouroboros power. Riku informs them that they need some kind of "Trigger" to power up. In order to activate this trigger, Rex and Shulk volunteer to fight Nikol and Glimmer at the Gotrock Oracle Ruins. Nikol and Glimmer struggle a bit against the two, but are able to unlock more Ouroboros power to defeat Rex and Shulk, powering up the Ouroboros Stone in the process. Rex and Shulk then agree to let them tag along to Origin. With both matters dealt with, the party turns in for the night.

Later that night, Rex and Glimmer having a small heart-to-heart. Glimmer asks Rex about his eye scar. He tells her that he got it during the fight with Alpha, saying he got sloppy and had to pay for it. However, Rex kind of likes the scar, telling her how someone he really looked up to, referring to Zeke, "had an eye thing too".

Glimmer then asks Rex why he risks life and limb fighting to protect people he doesn't even know. Rex tells her that if through his fighting, someone in the world gets to smile, that's the type of world he wants to help create. He explains how as long as someone's alive, they're always connected to others, saying that it used to be called affinity, or bonds.

Avatars of Origin[]

Rex Glimmer N

Rex and Glimmer fighting N

The next morning, the party leaves for the Black Mountains, where Prison Island is located. Soon after, they finally arrive at the Prison Terrace. They are greeted by N, who reveals that the one keeping Na'el in this world is Matthew, which is why N's been trying to kill him. The party confronts him, and N's clash with Matthew reveals to them a memory from Origin, of N's attack on the City and Alpha's involvement with it. All of a sudden, Alpha shows up and sends a ray of lighting at N, shocking him. Alpha's power emanates a fog which consumes the party.

The party arrives inside a memory from Origin. The party looks around at the scenery of a house with a garden, with a view of a large city with tall buildings, with one tower reaching into the sky. Rex immediately recognizes the tower as the World Tree in its original form, and he and Shulk confirm that this is a memory of Klaus's world. The party then follows the sound of a piano, and find Na'el, who explains that the world could be like this if they went through with Alpha's plan. A then shows Na'el the Land of Morytha, the aftermath of Klaus' experiment and what Alpha's proposed new world would ultimately become if his plan succeeded. Matthew persuades her that she would be no different from Moebius if she continued to view the Kevesi and Agnians as "things" unworthy of life, and that they could live like the people of the City if they were only allowed to choose it. Na'el agrees to join the party and stop Alpha, but not before Alpha regains control of her and disappears.

The party is then transported back to the Ark, where Alpha insists that the future has no need for the things of the past and that conscience is useless to the Trinity Processor. The party refuses to accept his goals, with Shulk and Rex recalling that Klaus trusted them with the future, and engage in combat with Alpha. After a while, Alpha tries to pull Matthew's soul in, but he resists and stays inside his body before N intervenes in the battle. Matthew expresses that for now, he's glad to have N at his side. Alpha unleashes his true form, that of a large humanoid figure with an empty, mask-like face. In a final effort to defeat Alpha, N grants Matthew the powers of his Sword of The End and instructs him to combine it with his Ouroboros Knuckles. Matthew's gauntlets begin to emit green energy, which Rex quickly recognizes to be Pneuma's power. This grants the party the true power of Ouroboros, resulting in Alpha's demise.

Origin's New Avatars

Rex, Shulk, and A become Origin's new avatars

Shulk and Rex begin to fade, and they reveal that without Alpha, Origin requires a new avatar to keep Aionios stable, which will be themselves and A. The party expresses disagreement, but Rex assures the group that they will see them all again when the worlds are restored. Rex and Shulk grant their life force to their respective children, Glimmer and Nikol, and step forward into a large rift, telling them that the three of them will be waiting for them at the far edge of time. As they enter the rift, Shulk and Rex ask A if they had foreseen the current turn of events, but A states that their hopes have always been a constant in the flow of time.

Statue of Rex in the City's Memorial Hall

When the City was rebuilt, a statue of Rex was placed in the Memorial Hall alongside the statues of Shulk, Matthew, Nikol, Glimmer, and Na'el. Though the statue is for Linka, the founder of House Cassini, she chose to have the statue depict her mentor instead, in his honor.

Master Driver[]

Once Rex becomes a Master Driver in Chapter 7, he is able to use Pneuma in battle by pressing and holding the R button and then pressing the X button when he is at max affinity with Pyra and Mythra and the party gauge is full. He also gains the unique ability to use any Blade, even if he is not their Driver (excluding Poppi). Not only that, but his appearance and artwork change.

In Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed[]

In Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed, Rex fights as a Master Driver, an Agnian Attacker class, and wields the Firelight Swords as his Blades. He is significantly damage-focused, with much of his kit revolving around landing critical hits.

In a Chain Attack, Rex starts with 15 TP by default, and can gain 5 more through a "TP Plus" skill in his Affinity Growth tree. Rex's Chain Art is Deliverance Hew, with the default completion bonus being "Reduces enemy physical defense by 45 percentage points during Chain Attack".

In Xenoblade Chronicles 3[]

After completing the Challenge Battle The Two Saviors, Rex is unlocked as a Hero. There are several gameplay differences between his appearances in Future Redeemed and the main game:

  • The Ouroboros Powers Cross Blaze and Rolling Smash have been converted into Agnian Arts with auto-attack-based cooldowns, to be consistent with other Heroes who only have Arts of one cooldown type. Sword Bash is unavailable.
    • The stats of the Arts at Rank 20 match the fully upgraded stats in Future Redeemed, with the exception of the cooldown of Cross Blaze and Rolling Smash. This also holds true for Rex's skills, which are unchanged from Future Redeemed.
  • His Heroic Chain is fixed to "Multiplies TP by 130% when first in line to attack, and makes all attacks critical", and his Chain Order's completion bonus is fixed to "Reduces enemy physical defense by 45/53/60/68/75 percentage points during Chain Attack" (the reduction is dependent on level).
  • Similar to other Heroes, Rex's Gem loadout is fixed to the following:
  • Rex's default accessories are the following Common-variant accessories, which can be changed in post-game or New Game +:
  • Compared to Future Redeemed, Rex's base stats are scaled such that he has higher base stats at lower levels, though he will have the same base stats at level 99 in both Future Redeemed and the main game (when excluding Affinity Growth). The base stats in the main game are shown in the below table.
    • Rex's weapon stats scale with his level (similar to all other characters in the main game) instead of being manually upgraded. However, since the level I weapon in Future Redeemed is equivalent to the weapon at level 10 in the main game, his final Attack stat at level 1 is lower in the main game than in Future Redeemed with a level I weapon. In contrast, the level X weapon in Future Redeemed is equivalent to the weapon at level 99 in the main game.
Level HP Attack Healing Power Dexterity Agility Critical Rate Block Rate Physical Defense Ether Defense
1, base 357 59 (+20) 12 41 25 18% 4% 15% 15%

99, with default accessories 5,095 1,586 (+70) 170 418 251 46% [+20%] 8% 15% 15%

Rex also has some differences with other Heroes in the main game:

  • Rex has no Ascension Quest; he is Rank 20 in his class when he joins the party. His class cannot be inherited or controlled by any playable character, and consequently does not grant any Master Arts or Skills.
  • Battle!! plays when he is used in battle if the "Special BGM" setting is enabled.
  • As a DLC Hero, he will not appear in any story cutscenes, nor will he participate in the final boss battle, unless chosen as the party's Hero.

XC2-BotW-Rex-costume

Rex's costume worn by Link in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

A DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild bringing "Rex's costume" to Link was released on November 9, 2017. It offers the new side quest Collaboration: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 where Link must discover three red treasures across Hyrule, each of them containing the Salvager Headwear, Vest and Trousers. These three pieces of Rex's costume individually grant Link the bonus effect Swim Speed Up, with a set bonus of Swim Dash Stamina Up if all three pieces are worn together.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

SSBU DLC 04

Rex during Pyra's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Rex's salvager costume complete with Azurda is available for Mii Fighters as bonus content from the fighters pass in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Rex's Spirit also appears on the Spirit Board and in Adventure Mode in the World of Dark's Sacred Realm. Additionally, Rex's Spirit can be enhanced into his Master Driver appearance.

Rex also appears as part of Pyra and Mythra's moveset. When Pyra and Mythra activate their Final Smashes, Burning Sword and Sacred Arrow respectively, Rex appears and slashes with the Aegis Sword to trap any opponents hit, and then Rex and Pyra or Mythra perform the attack together, appearing very similar to how the attacks are performed in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Rex also appears appears during Pyra and Mythra's up taunt, during which he cheers on the active character while pumping his fist in a similar fashion to how he cheers during Blade Specials in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Lastly, Rex appears during two of Pyra and Mythra's victory animations.

According to Masahiro Sakurai, Rex could not make the base roster due to it having been finalized before the release of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The reason for why he could not be playable alongside Pyra and Mythra were due to hardware limitations of the Nintendo Switch, citing the detail across their models being a key factor.

Quotes[]

Xenoblade Chronicles 2[]

Story[]

  • "Listen, I swore to you. We're going to Elysium together! That's a promise. I'm going to Elysium for you. I'm doing all of this for you. We'll do it together! We'll find out together! We'll find your place in this world! Find out where we're headed... And see what our future holds. So believe me! I won't let the world burn a second time! So Pyra, Mythra... Join me!"
  • "That's right. When a person dies, that's it for them. But their thoughts and memories will always be passed on to someone else. Isn't that the same with you Blades? Your past selves get passed down to someone else to become your new selves... Isn't that how you've always lived? We're no different!"
  • "You're the one who won't change. That's exactly why you hate those who try to!"
  • "It's so strange... I don't even know what I'm doing here any more... Everyone's all wrong... They all said I... But now...you two... Did...did I go wrong somewhere...?"
  • "I'll punch him in his stupid face. And then... Probably get a drink with him or something. That's the sixth rule of the Salvager's Code. First have a punch-out, then drink to forget. Once you've forgotten, the friendship's all set! I'm not old enough to drink yet though..."
  • "It will change! I will change it! That's the reason we've come all this way!"
  • "I'm doing it...for myself. If it helps put smiles on people's faces... Helps them live their lives together... Then that's my role in this world!"

Salvager's Code[]

During the course of the game Rex mentions seven rules of the Salvager's Code:

  • First rule: "Swim like a fish, drink like one too!"
  • Second rule: "Always help others that help you!"
  • Third rule: "Make a girl cry? That's not gonna fly. Make a girl smile? You pass the trial!"
  • Fourth rule: "Open a chest, it might turn out great. Until then, it's just a crate."
  • Fifth rule: "Always be-..." [Interrupted by Mythra]
  • Sixth rule: "First have a punch-out, then drink to forget. Once you've forgotten, the friendship's all set!"
  • Seventh rule: "Never leave a debt unpaid!"

Gameplay[]

  • "Let's show 'em a thing or three!"
  • "Treasure acquired."

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed[]

Story[]

  • "Drop it, Shulk! Nothing's gonna get through to him! He's a heartless machine!"
  • "Leave it to Uncle Rex. I'll show 'em a thing or three!"
  • "Everyone knows the real hero steps up in the third act!"
  • "If through my fighting…someone out there gets to smile… That's the kind of world I wanna help create."
  • "Long as you're alive…you're always connected to others. We used to call it affinity, or bonds. "
  • "A long time ago, I made a decision here. That no matter what it cost me, if it's for the people that count on me…if it's to live up to their trust, I'd walk through hell and high water, and gladly."
  • "It's you there's no place for...Alpha. 'Cause Klaus... He entrusted the future to us. So he could atone for his past. He followed his conscience."
  • "Cheers to old Klaus... His gifts just keep on giving...! Damn it... If only *those two* were here..."

Gameplay[]

  • "Wipe them off the face of Aionios!"

Trivia[]

  • Malos points out Rex's eyes as a sign he should've been wary about when hiring him. Both Rex and Addam share a golden eye color, possibly implying that Rex is a descendant of Addam.
  • Rex's broadsword is called "Junk Sword", the same as Shulk's initial weapon in Xenoblade Chronicles.
  • Rex and Shulk have a similar origin; both are killed whilst on a quest to find their respective legendary swords and are resurrected to further the goal of the entity the sword belongs to.
  • Rex is the only protagonist in the Xenoblade Chronicles series to have his English voice actor change between games.
  • Rex is the only playable character in the Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy to always be present in the party throughout an entire game. He is also the only party member in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to never leave the party at any point.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Rex is the only Spirit in World of Light whose Spirit Battle stage is affected by DLC, as the Cloud Sea of Alrest is the stage used for the Spirit Battle if Challenger Pack 9 has been purchased, replacing Kongo Falls. Rex's Spirit Battle is also the only Spirit Battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to have its battle conditions be affected by DLC, with the "floor is lava" condition being removed if Challenger Pack 9 has been purchased.
